Soulflow, Alterplinary Storytelling, 2024–Present.

Since 2024, I have been helping tell the story of Soulflow–a multi-year interdisciplinary research collaboration between the biomedical engineer Patrick L. Purdon, Ph.D1 (Stanford University) and the jazz pianist Kevin Harris2 (Berklee College of Music). The storytelling component of Soulflow includes talks, educational materials, and an in-production documentary film directed by the Emmy-nominated, award-winning documentary filmmaker Josh Izenberg.3

As a storytelling initiative, Soulflow takes audiences and viewers on a sonic and scientific journey into the intersection of music, science, empathy, connection, communication, and understanding. The Soulflow story also captures the remarkable and unlikely partnership and friendship between a jazz musician and a neuroscientist. Together, this unlikely pair and a team of collaborators across disciplines have embarked on a boundless quest to understand fundamental scientific and humanistic questions. Purdon and Harris’ research project seeks to explore brain activity during small ensemble jazz improvisation. The study uses electroencephalography4 (EEG) to monitor and record brain activity data. Using state-of-the-art technology and data analysis the project seeks to contribute to our understanding of brain mechanisms surrounding social interaction performed under uncertainty—what most of us would simply call improvisation. The first Souflow talk (co-produced with Aandre Davis) took place at Berklee College of Music in July of 2026. I have supported the project as a producer and designer. If you are interested in learning more about or supporting Soulflow the documentray film, please contact Josh Izenberg.
